Los Gatos is an upscale picturesque town nestled at the bottom of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Los Gatos is one of Santa Clara County’s oldest communities. In 1840, the Mexican government granted a land patent to Sebastian Peralta and Jose Hernandez. Los Gatos was originally named La Rinconada de Los Gatos (Cat’s Corner) by early settlers due to the screams of mountain lions prowling in the night. In 1868, 100 acres of the rancho was selected as a town site. The Town was incorporated in 1887, and by 1890 the Town’s population had grown to 1,652. By 1963 the town had expanded to 4,000 acres with a population of 11,750. Today the town has grown to 14 square miles and an estimated population of 28,952.
Downtown Los Gatos is filled with sidewalk cafes, exquisite dining, art galleries, chic clothing boutiques and antique shops. Downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the model of what communities strive to achieve in a downtown. They have the most exquisite examples of Victorian architecture. Homes in this community range from million dollar cottages to large custom built homes nestled among the surrounding hills. Los Gatos provides a place for business large and small.
Los Gatos is home to Oak Meadow and Vasona Park. These parks combined are over 12 acres. Vasona Lake is open for non-power boating year round. Row boats and paddle boats are available to rent from early spring to fall. The lake also offers fishing and a bocce court. Oak Meadow Park is the home of the one-third-scale steam engine locomotive Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad and the Bill Mason Carousel. This park also features an airplane for the children to play on and picnic tables throughout for visitors to enjoy. The 10 mile Los Gatos Creek trail runs through the parks. The complete trail extends from Lexington Reservoir above Los Gatos all the way to Meridian Ave. in San Jose. Still a work in progress, the trail will eventually end at the Guadalupe River in downtown San Jose.
