Sunnyvale's history has long been based on its economy. Early on, the area's vast open space and rich soil were ideal for the fruit orchards that helped support the settlement's first residents. With the construction of the railroad in 1864, the economic base of the area was able to expand, as canneries to process the goods from the surrounding orchards were established near the rail lines. In 1906, the Hendy Iron Works moved from San Francisco to Sunnyvale, continuing the city's industrial development. By 1940, the town had grown to about 4,400 and Hendy Iron Works was overtaken by Westinghouse to support the war effort. Post war, the defense-related industry arrived, taking advantage of the pleasant climate and Moffett Air Station. Lockheed Missiles & Space Company relocated to Sunnyvale in 1956, and soon became Sunnyvale's greatest employer. The 50s and 60s became the periods of great expansion for the community, resulting in a head count of 96,000 in 1970. The defense era turned into the high-tech era when the microprocessor was invented in 1971. In the years that followed, companies with vision saw the potential of computers also the power of semiconductors. The City became the core of research, development and manufacturing that made Silicon valley, and that legacy goes on today in the time of the Internet.
