Stony Brook is a charming, unincorporated village in the town of Brookhaven, which is located in Suffolk County in southeastern New York. The village is situated on the northern shore of Long Island on Stony Brook Harbor. The area was first settled by Boston colonists in 1655. Throughout the 19th century, the area was a thriving shipbuilding center, but today, Stony Brook is primarily a tourist destination and educational center. Stony Brook has a bustling population of about 15,000 residents and is home to the Stony Brook campus of the State University of New York system.
Other major establishments and attractions in Stony Brook include the Carriage House museum, which is home to over 250 internationally collected horse-drawn vehicles, as well as a grist mill that was built in 1699, which now functions as a museum. The village is also home to other unique and quaint art and history museums. Other popular sites in Stony Brook include the Sand Street Beach, a duck pond, and the newly created Avalon Park, which features a stunning boardwalk, nature trails, lush landscapes, and much more.
