Situated 15 miles south of Knoxville, Tennessee, Alcoa serves a population of 8,000 residents. Built as a community to serve local industry, Alcoa is not a suburban community, despite its proximity to Knoxville, although a few residents do make the 30-minute drive into the city daily. The Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport that serves Knoxville is just a few miles west of Alcoa and connects the area to destinations around the nation. Residents of an apartment or home rental in Alcoa can find work locally at businesses based in town, including Desco Manufacturing. However, the largest employer in town is Alcoa Corporation that owns a large smelting plant that created the town.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is just south of the town and provides an excellent day trip or weekend getaway for camping, exploring, biking, hiking, and other recreational outdoor activities.
