Germantown, Tennessee Info

Germantown, immediately East of Memphis, began as a horse town and was mainly pastures and narrow, tree-lined streets. Cotton Plantations existed here in the 1800’s as well as part of the Underground Railroad system during the Civil War. Germantown is known as one of the largest homes of Tennessee walking horses. Originally known as Pea Ridge in its earlier years, town lots were laid out in 1834 by surveyor N. T. German and the name was changed to Germantown in 1836, reflecting the presence of many German families.

Even though the Memphis-Charleston Railroad was built through the community in 1852, Germantown experienced huge set backs in population and growth through the period of the Civil War and the yellow fever epidemics of that era reduced its population to a few hundred.

The town rebounded slowly. Churches destroyed in the Civil War were rebuilt, schools were constructed and the population began to return around the turn of the century.

During the twentieth century, the community derived its strength through involvement of citizens, as evidenced in the churches, garden clubs and civic organizations. The Poplar Pike Improvement Association and the Germantown Civic Club played vital roles in the physical and social development of the community. Homes, shops, hospitals, restaurants all grew at a constant pace and all kept within the city guidelines to keep the city looking beautiful. The tough signage codes and zoning ordinances allowed residents to continue to enjoy living in a city with no billboards, no tall buildings or neon signs.

In the last half of the century, the population grew from about 400 to more than 40,000. Over several decades, elected and civic leadership, with support of citizens, worked proactively to control suburban growth through development regulations, aesthetic controls and strategic planning efforts.
The result is a premier residential environment with high quality city services that make Germantown an attractive, healthy, safe and wholesome place to live, work, worship and play.
One of the city's strong points is its parks system, with many neighborhood parks. The city likes to point out that there is a park located within one-half mile of every residence. The Germantown Performing Arts Centre and the Civic Centre are new additions to the city. Fine dining and shopping are also convenient to residents.
The Germantown Charity Horse show event takes place each year in June. Organized in 1948, this five-day event is one of the largest multi-breed horse shows in the United States, attracting 700 to 1,000 horses. Classes range from kids and horses in costumes to Tennessee walking horses to the grand prix finale. The atmosphere is relaxed and festive and sure to please.
The Germantown Charity Horse Show has been selected as one of the Southeast Tourism Society's Top Events for the month of June.
Since Germantown is a thriving residential area, most activities surround the family. Whether it is visiting the Germantown Performing Arts Center, the Germantown Garden Club, or simply attending one of the events sponsored by the Germantown Symphony Orchestra, one will surely find an enjoyable time.
Sporting events play a large part of the family structure as well. The community offers Softball for Adults and juniors as well as a full basketball program for both. The Germantown Centre offers volleyball programs, tennis, soccer, and swimming events and competition. Special Olympics events for mentally handicapped youth are run by the Greater Memphis Special Olympics organization. It offers training and participation in regional, state and national competition. Cheerleading is also a big draw and you will find championship awards in several categories for cheerleaders from Germantown.
The community of Germantown has much to offer to its residents and this suburb should not be overlooked when looking for a great place to live in the Memphis Tennessee area.
