Known as the gateway to the Olympic Peninsula, Gig Harbor is a city located in Pierce County, and has a population of about 7,000. This beautiful waterfront city is within less than an hour's drive from both Tacoma and Seattle. Gig Harbor was named by Captain Charles Wilkes, and in 1867, many immigrants of Swedish, Norwegian, and Croatian descent arrived in the area. Gig Harbor's economy consisted primarily of commercial fishing, boat building, and logging until the completion of the second Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which resulted in the city becoming a suburb of Tacoma. However, the stunning tree-lined neighborhoods and waterfront lots have attracted many people and have made it a favorable place to live for those who make the daily commute over the bridge to Tacoma.
Despite the booming residential development in the area, city leaders have worked hard to preserve the rich history and beauty of Gig Harbor. The city attracts great numbers of tourists each year due to its beautiful landscape and excellent shopping, dining, and recreational opportunities. One of the most popular attractions that lures people here from around the world is the Maritime Village, which offers a beautiful scenery, galleries, upscale shops, fine dining, amazing gardens, and many recreational activities. One of the most popular restaurants in Gig Harbor is the Tides Tavern, where diners can watch the boats enter and exit the harbor. Jerisich Park is also a beautiful park where many community events and festivals also take place.
